A Victorian Legacy - Chapter 23.1 30th June 10

This is my first attempt at a legacy, and after reading so many good stories on this board I decided to have a go at chronicling it.

As the title says it is a Victorian themed legacy with the following handicaps: first born male inherits, behind the times and strict family values. I apologise for the sometimes ropey photos in the first few chapters, but I think that they get better from chapter four onwards.

Also from chapter 8 onwards the amount of modern paraphernalia considerably diminishes.

A quick note on how I'm organising the chapters, I am counting the start of a new generation from the point when the youngest heir becomes an adult, and the previous heir is an elder. E.g. if my generation three heir returns from uni whilst my generation two heir is still an adult, in my mind I will still be playing generation two, and won't be playing generation three until he ages to elder. I hope that makes sense.

The failure of the exchange in May, June and July meant that I had to find an alternative method of hosting my chapters. I like the new format so much, and don't want to trust the exchange any more, so for any chapter or interlude published before May 09, you now have two options for viewing them: the exchange or SlideShare. Anything published after May 09 will be on SlideShare only. Also, given the fact that SlideShare doesn't have the same constraints with regards to content as the exchange, please be aware that I may use stronger language and/or explore more adult themes in the later chapters.

Mrs Beeton's Household Book Mrs Issabella Beeton edited by Kay Fairfax. Mrs Beeton, nuff said.
Hints on Household Taste Charles L. Eastlake. One of the most influential writers on interior design from the Victorian period, this book is great for getting the right look to the houses in my game.
The Victorian House Judith Flanders. Simply one of the best social history books I've read. She takes us through everyday life as witnessed by the rooms of a house.
Victorian House Style Linda Osband. Aimed at people who live in period houses who want to restore some of the original ambiance, this is a great source of ideas as to how to decorate my houses.
The Victorians A. N. Wilson. Details the history of the period, including the political scene.

I wouldn't say ruined, necessarily, though I do suggest keeping them out if possible. Try switching to a Sim out of shot - that's why I always do.

Thanks for the tip about plumbobs. As I've gone along I have become more aware of them, and I have been trying to remember to switch to another sim on the lot if I can't cut them out of a shot. Unfortunately this has been difficult if I only have one sim on the lot, so they have still snuck in, I'll have to try to remember to use the plumbob cheat.

Chapters 2 and 3 are nearly complete, but because it took me a month to get round to finishing chapter 1, I'm trying to stagger the release of the next two, so there is not so much of a gap once they are out. Well, that's the plan anyway .

Great legacy! You're doing really well with the Victorian theme, which is, I agree, refreshing different. Aside from a few trivial spelling errors, your writing is very good. I also really like the fact that you don't restrict yourself to faces one and two. I look forward to reading chapter three!

Glad you are enjoying reading this legacy, I'm certainly having a blast playing them.

Iolanthe, I must admit that although I do like face 2 and have some vague idea about maybe marrying Dagmar Bertino into the family at some point, I really do not like face 1, it's just so ... blah. The only reason Gerald Placeholder has face 1 is because I was lazy and couldn't be bothered to change the face that CAS threw out. I like my sims to have character, and so I'm not going for 'pretty,' I'm going for which ever townie or NPC I take a shine to and decide I want as a playable. Oh, and my sims have to like them too of course

My objective when creating Gabe in bodyshop was to create a sim who wasn't based on face 1 (in fact he is based on the Orlando Centowski face), who had strong features which weren't perfect, (in particular I wanted to give him a broken nose), but who was still a handsome man to look at. I think I succeeded, and this is why I was quite disappointed to see that all three of Gabe's children had inherited their mother's badly set broken nose, and hampster cheeks. The first kids of generation 3 have just been born, so I'm waiting to see if Gabe's facial structure is about to re-appear, his eye colour has, so I'm hoping that maybe I will see something more.

I'm hoping to get chapter 3 uploaded next weekend.

A marvelous read. In the Victorian challenge every generation after the third can "invent" an object. So as soon and gen. 3 is born you can have the smoke detector.

Ohhh this is a good one.. I love Victorian, so the theme has allready made me like this story :p

Like I said, love Victorian and you're doing this Legacy so good that I feel like starting my own, eventhough I dont know if I could ever do it as good as you.. You've done a lot of research, and you done good! So, if I should start one or anyone else should, I would just HAVE to add something special to it, a storyline, plot or something.. Cause I cant do it as well as a normal legacy as you.. Seriously!!

Mizz_Julez: Yay another fan of the Victorian era!

Although some of the information is coming from my remembrance of GCSE and A-Level history, and also the numerous documentries I have seen about the Victorians, a lot of the facts are coming from an absolutely fantastic book I bought a few years ago called The Victorian House by Judith Flanders. It basically describes how the upper middle classes in Britain lived by taking the reader through the rooms of the house. If you can get hold of a copy I thoroughly recommend it: it's the best book I have ever read about Victorian social history.

Reggie: I didn't realise that there was a Victorian challenge out there; there are so many about. I'll have to go look it up.

I guess I have, and yet I still feel that I haven't played or written as much of the family as I would have liked. There's quite a bit that I wanted to get done before Bon Voyage comes out, but unless I spend every free minute playing, I don't think that's gonna happen!
